“Lakaz” is the Mauritian Creole word for home. It derives from the French la cage which translates to cage. This descends from the French colonial period in Mauritius, in which African slaves did not own houses but cages. In Mauritius we still use the word lakaz to refer to our homes.
The concept of home is something that can be quite intricate for people with migration backgrounds. I myself have spent my entire life to identify what my home is. On one hand I have Scheveningen, where I was born and raised. On the other hand I have Mauritius, where most of my family lives.
In my graduation project, I portray my quest to my own sense of home and belonging through an installation. To accompany this, I created a podcast series in which I discuss this through the lens of culture, race and identity, together with close relationships such as my parents and my brother.
The podcast series will be available on various streaming services from July 13th. The installation will be exposed at the WDKA Graduation Show from July 13th until July 17th.
