Plek voor 1 is a film about shared appearance and identity, in which my twin sister and I portray the urge of wanting to be seen as an individual while also having a twin identity. A duality that lives among twins but is also present in our modern society.
My twin sister and I don’t have the exact same character but we do share almost everything; similar interests, stuff, friendships, and, of course, our physical looks. As a result, people would constantly question our identity, and will frequently view it as not unique or independent enough.
Even though I’ve never related to the word ‘unique’ or to quotes like ‘there’s only one you’, I would still catch myself trying to prove my uniqueness and independence.
This duality does not only reflect twin struggles but also that of the modern capitalistic society in which we live. Due to new technologies, everything becomes more manufacturable and more tempting to copy. In contradiction to this, western society places high value on the unique independent individual.
In the film, we showcase this duality from a twin perspective. We play with the confusion and fascination that comes with looking alike and sharing parts of your identity.
