Women in Horror
“Women in Horror” represents women in the horror genre realistically and respectfully.
The art piece introduces three women as anti-heroes who, despite their emotional obstacles and battles, dare to stand up for themselves. Their motive is their motivation to get what they want: revenge. Other women can identify with them since they have depth and are familiar with the problems the three women face.
Since horror has a history of sexualizing and portraying women unrealistically, artist and horror enthusiast Ceciel Haenen wanted to do things differently. The horror genre often only saw women as fearful and ‘helpless’ victims, but this is not the case in Ceciel’s art piece: “Women in Horror”.
By realistically illustrating women, we ensure that the representation of the woman is shown righteously.”
