In the research I investigated the aspects of belonging in a new space, starting with my own experience as a migrant, and expanding to the experiences of other first-generation migrants in the Netherlands. I also compared our sense of belonging to those who lived in the Netherlands their whole lives.
I did so by using visual participatory research in the shape of the HousBooks. They capture the multitudinous nature of the journey toward building a home in a new place.

Living through trauma makes us understand other people better. It makes us compassionate and gives us another level of connection.
Going myself through the traumatic experience of migrating to a new country gives me this superpower of compassion.
With this power, I used my heart to listen to people and transform
their words into an emphatic artwork.

I created 6 stop-motion animations based on 6 sentences from the HouseBooks.

For the final presentation, the animations are projected onto an installation consisting of a house and a person.
Behind a house there is a chair where a visitor can take a sit and exist within the installation to take in the experience.
Moreover, the person is also a bookshelf where the HouseBooks can be found. The audience is welcome to interact with the books and leaf through pages while seating on the chair.
The installation will have sound in form of the narration. The sentences that inspired the visuals will be read by their authors in their native language and in English.
