PIERCING PLIEN, THE MATERNITY NURSE WITH PIERCINGS
A children’s book about being different.

Hi, I’m Madelief and at the beginning of this year, I decided that I want to work in maternity care after graduation. I found out, after a lot of calling back and forth, that piercings are still not entirely desirable. One said it had to do with hygiene, the other with safety, and another said it had to do with the image. After my research, I discovered that the hygiene and security thing hangs by a thread, and it mainly comes down to image. What would mean we still associate piercings with scary and dirty?

This project started with a frustration. I translated this topic into a children’s book because I wanted to raise this topic positively and show that there is nothing wrong with being different and having your own identity (in this case by expressing your- self with piercings.

Children get an idea of self-image from the age of 6 and start at this age also with forming opinions, and that is why I wanted to put my subject with children. We can never begin too soon showing that being different is good and that you must turn the world into your hand.

A page out of ‘Piercing Plien’

My project consists of one main part and one side part

The main part is the children’s book for ages 5-7 about Piercing Plien, the best maternity nurse in the world, all because of her unique piercings that help her do her job.

In addition to the children’s book, I made dress-up piercings for children as a side project. This has the same message as the book: being different is good, so experiment. It is good for children to role-play because it teaches them to put themselves in someone else’s shoes.

If you’re interested in a copy of the book and they are all sold out during the graduation show or you could not make it or anything, you can contact me by sending me a message;
