Animated Short Film about Empathy & Non-Violence
How to educate international children with moral and ethical values using non-verbal and non-violent visual communication through animation, using graphic design background and methodology ?
Research Question
My project itself is an animated short film about empathy and non-violence, bullying and discouraging violent behaviour and solutions along children, and adults.
Violence is getting increasingly into mediums accessible for children, such as video games, streams, television shows, toys and cartoons. Even if age-restricted, it still gets in the hands of those who weren’t its intended users. My goal for other artists, is encouraging creation of non-violent content for children.
With the digital publication, I created a Prototype for a phsyical photoalbum that serves as a interactive Children’s book, as well as a book of models, which features all of the models (which can be seen below) I created from scratch for the Animated short film.
Choosing a non-verbal format was a decision to emphasize on graphic design becoming an ever closer relative to animation, yet its relative skills, background and understanding can serve as an alternative method of storytelling, educational content and entertainment with many benefits. One of those benefits, are in fact that non-verbal format is designed to reach a wider international audience, which matches the sole purpose of my outcome; promoting ethical values.
In collaboration with my project partner Karla Aračić (B.A. Communication Studies, B.A. Acting and Media), through a foundation of references for educational frameworks, such as SEL, UDL, CRT, we analyzed different approaches on encouraging children in empathy, diversity, self-awareness and self-acceptance. With many different techniques related to communicative education, I applied research into the production of the narrative. But still as I was limiting the project itself to a specific audience, I encouraged feedback and critique directly from my audience (children and parents). With analyzing responses, personal stories and experiences within topics, I evaluated my own standpoint and objectives.
Lastly, with learning new software and 3D modelling skills and existing production knowledge, I developed a hybrid publication. An eight and a half minute long international animated short film about empathy and non-violence. With a photoalbum-booklet for parent-child discussion and education related to the cartoon.
