My name is Noa. I catch myself staring at the ceiling a lot. Maybe because in some situations I get overwhelmed, maybe because I am bored, or maybe there was just something about the ceiling that caught my eye. One day I scrolled through the photo gallery on my phone and I found over 200 pictures of different ceilings. It made me wonder: Why do ceilings interest me so? Do other people notice ceilings as well?
In my research I found many ways I could use the ceilings as an inspiration for my art and I found ways to make them seem more interesting. But then I realized this was all wrong. I liked ceilings just the way they were and I didn’t need to change them to be able to love them.
The conclusion of my research was that the invisible doesn’t have to adapt in order to be seen.
Because I’m a teacher, the ceilings in this research also act as a symbol for the kids that go unnoticed in class. How do we make these children more visible without asking them to change?
For my final work I created a tour, ‘De Plafondleiding’, in which the ceilings have a voice. You will be able to see them and experience them without having to look up and it’s also possible to listen to what they have to say.
