Interlaced is a collection of contemporary textile explorations inspired by the traditional craft of bobbin lacemaking. This project aims to preserve and revitalize a traditional craft that has gradually been overshadowed due to industrialization. By utilizing this relatively uncommon textile craft, Interlaced honors its rich history while exploring its potential for future applications. The project emphasizes the artistic value, intricacy, and dedication involved in the making of lace. Through its exploration of form, scale, and color, Interlaced seeks to merge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, fostering a deeper connection to our heritage and surroundings.

Color studies made from lace

Learning how to craft bobbin lace has been incredibly rewarding and has provided me with a unique connection to my heritage through hands-on creation. It offers a deeply grounding experience that allows us to slow down and reconnect with our surroundings, which is something that could be valuable to all of us in today’s world. My research has revealed the clear potential of merging traditional craft with contemporary design. With my project, I am looking to continue this momentum, encouraging others to step out of their comfort zones and rediscover the essence of craftsmanship.

A special thanks to Lace Center of Bruges for their invaluable teaching on traditional lace and for encouraging me to explore beyond its boundaries.
