This research focuses on revitalising Barcelona’s inner courtyards, particularly in Fort Pienc, to turn these overlooked spaces into vibrant community hubs and green areas, benefiting especially children.
The “third space” concept, central to this study, refers to social environments distinct from home and work, fostering community interaction and engagement in a neutral, relaxed setting.
Despite Barcelona’s green urban strategies like “Eixos Verds” and “Superilles,” many courtyards remain underused. The research asks how these spaces can boost community spirit in Fort Pienc, what benefits they bring, and what improvements are needed.
Challenges include limited access, neglect, and maintenance issues. Field research showed these courtyards are used mainly at specific times and lack amenities and greenery.
The proposal aims to transform these courtyards into dynamic spaces for play, education, and recreation, enhancing access and incorporating native plants for biodiversity. This transformation seeks to make courtyards integral to community life.
Revitalising these courtyards can reconnect inhabitants, enrich public spaces, and reinforce Barcelona’s unique urban landscape
The courtyards in the area are being used for unintended purposes, such as parking, further diminishing their potential as vibrant public spaces.
In my design, each courtyard has a differnet use, and elements that define them.
The plaground has maritime elements for play.
The Community Garden has modular planters and a greenhouse.
The Park has organic seating islands with greenery.
