“Chairs of Tomorrowā€¯ explores the intersection of historical chair design and modern technology, inspired by my lifelong passion for furniture. I aim to reinterpret 20th-century chair design using closed-source AI, creating new forms that blend past and future aesthetics. By machine-learning coding, I merged pixel data from influential chair images, I then hand-built into physical 3D models. This process highlights the evolving role of technology in design, showcasing how digital tools can transform historical inspirations into contemporary creations, emphasising the impact of modern advancements on form, composition and aesthetics.
The final piece, combining metal and leather, reiterates the materials and aesthetics used within furniture design during the 20th century while introducing innovative elements. This project demonstrates the potential of AI as a creative catalyst, offering fresh perspectives on traditional designs for the future of furniture, highlighting the title.
I began coding an algorithm for the closed-source AI ‘StyleGan’ that generated new compositions based on my input as seen below. From thereon, I prototyped a lot of generated outcomes and chose my final design to recreate to scale.
