Fairytales are the mirror into many kid’s minds, something we usually lose while growing up. But how can we keep the magic alive?
MIRROR, MIRROR takes scenes from four classical fairytales to reconnect to the fantastical, gruesome origins of beloved tales. During this project I’ve worked with Rumpelstiltskin, the Little Match Girl, the Red Shoes and the Little Mermaid, with plans to keep adding to the series later on after graduation.
My research included a complete deep dive in the history of fairytales, which goes back thousands of years. Through word of mouth tales have been told and spread across the globe, resulting in the stories we now know (and the ones we might not be familiar with). This rich history is now mostly seen as children’s stories. While telling fairytales is very important for kids growing up, they have other important functions to adults as well.
The question of what we see as childish and why has always fascinated me, especially since I’m a cosplayer, and have been dressing up since 2016. This project gave me the opportunity to combine this question with my own expertise of costume/prop/set design, while also inviting viewers of the Graduation Show to ask the question to themselves; are there any interests you’re scared of sharing with others, and why? How does our perception of ‘childish’ interests/hobbies impact you?
During the show I invite everyone to experience the fantasy world themselves by becoming a part of my foto-series; take a picture in my photoset and re-evaluate your relationship with fairytales and what it means to be childish.
