<Han 한: To Look Back on Korean Maiden Ghosts> is a research-based graphic essay on the Maiden Ghost, the icon of horror in Korea.
The feminist discourse on horror is captivating because it reflects the desires of society, and the minority aspect often plays a role as a source of power.
The image of the Maiden Ghost has been reproduced in South Korean media and has dominated the perception of ghosts as female figures. Throughout the 10-minute animation film, it traces the history and identifies the social-cultural context behind it. It explains why the Maiden Ghost character became synonymous with the horror genre in Korea, based on the connection of ‘abjection’ and ‘Han.’ In this point of view, the Maiden Ghost can be a new feminist symbol, especially in the Confucianist Asian context. GLOO tries to introduce the Asian point of view on feminism, mainly to Western audiences, in order to expand the perspective.
GLOO(Yejin Lee) is a South Korean illustration artist. The name came from an igloo, a spiritual haven where she processes diverse contexts with visual creativity.
Currently, she mainly works on the lives and stories of women.
